BEGINNERS/ IMPROVERS

This course begins with the fundamental basic steps and is for a student who has had little or no salsa and/or dancing experience. There are many students who have danced salsa but still need a few beginner classes to break old habits and form a new understanding of the basics. We start with the three basic 8 count steps and several basic elements - building up to learning a combination and how to dance it in time with the music.

INTERMEDIATE

If you are an intermediate student you should be comfortable with everything that is included in our beginners class including the basic steps, cross body lead, cross body lead with inside turn, basic turns and dip. You should be comfortable dancing these steps with a partner and in time with the music. At this level we combine the basics with combinations at medium to fast tempo music. In the intermediate lessons you will learn many combinations and how to transition between them with style. You will learn how to remember combinations that you feel comfortable with and better able to implement turns, directional changes with better balance and more styling. In our Intermediate class you will learn more about body movement, spacing, and partnership technique. In each intermediate class you will learn a complex combination and how to dance this combination with anyone (not just your partner).

ADVANCED

SenSalsa currently offer advanced salsa classes as a private lesson - and from time to time in a workshop setting. In our experience it takes much longer than an hour to learn advanced figures and technique. These lessons may include instruction on advanced combinations, leading technique, styling, dips, tricks and shines.

Below are our answers to some of the most common questions we get from prospective dance students.

What levels do you teach?

SenSalsa offers four levels of instruction for beginner, improvers, intermediate and advanced students as described above under class levels.

Do I need a partner to take lessons?

No. Most students come without a partner and we encourage partner rotation as the fastest way to improve your lead/follow techniques.

Do I need special shoes?

For your first month of class you should wear a basic shoe with a low heel (ladies) and guys a flat leather bottom. As long as the sole of the shoe is smooth to allow for turns. Dance shoes are recommended for Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Should I take private classes or group classes?

SenSalsa offers private lessons at either your place, our place or at a *dance studio. (*Studio hire costs are additional and are payable by the student at the time of lesson).

Many people interested in salsa classes call and ask for private classes. In order to save our students money we like to advise the following: Come to a setting that is not "nightclub" oriented to learn your basics first.

Take at least 3-4 group classes and then if you really want to take private classes you will have the basis to work from. You will also be able to pinpoint areas that you want to work on that you may be having trouble grasping in a group setting. This way you get more value for money.

For those of you who are on the shy side and do not want to learn basics in front of anyone else, or for those of you who want 1-on-1 personal attention only, then private classes are definitely the right choice.

'Passion is sometimes stronger than ones capabilities hence, respect all who embark on this salsa journey whether they are below or above you in their strengths as a dancer. Their passion may be just as strong as yours.' – Orville
