WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?
Capoeira is a dance martial art developed by African slaves and their descendants in Brazil. Players weave kicks and acrobatic movements to the sound of infectious percussion and singing, creating an exciting blend of live music, fighting techniques, acrobatics and physical expression. Rapidly gaining popularity internationally, there are around 3 million Capoeira players worldwide.
WHO CAN DO IT?

CAPOEIRA AND THE COMMUNITY
Capoeira, an art born out of poverty, disadvantage and struggle, continues to be used as a powerful tool for empowerment, self discovery and social awareness. Around the world, and Brazil in particular, Capoeira is used to give hope and open people's eyes to their own potential, despite limitations placed on them by others. Through varying social projects, Capoeira:
● Promotes self respect and pride in impoverished communities
● Acts as physical therapy for people with disabilities
● Offers an alternative to gang membership and street violence
● Promotes health and well-
Capoeira Angonal Aotearoa aims to make this kind of a difference in our local community
through specific programs, and in general by providing easy, affordable (in some
cases free) access to Capoeira, as well as opportunities for students to travel and
take part in cultural exchange abroad. We are currently seeking funding to help us
achieve these objectives.
